Is luxury dropshipping right for you?

Lhira Marcial, LD Academy · · 6 min

Welcome to the Academy. Over the next six weeks I'll coach you from an empty store to a luxury shop that's ready for Black Friday on 27 November. Two lessons a week, one job at the end of each. Do the homework and you'll be ready; skip it and you'll be guessing in the busiest week of the year.

Let's start with an honest question: is this business right for you?

What luxury dropshipping actually is

You run the shop and the customer relationship. Your supplier holds the stock, packs the order and ships it to your customer. You never buy inventory upfront, so you can list hundreds of designer pieces without a warehouse.

With luxury, three things change compared with general dropshipping:

  • Higher order values, fewer orders. A designer bag or a pair of sneakers sells for hundreds, not tens. One sale matters more, and so does every unhappy customer.
  • Thinner percentage margins. Brands control their prices, so you won't see the 3× markups of unbranded products. You win on the amount you make per order, not the percentage.
  • Trust is the product. Your customer is paying for authenticity. Where the item comes from, how fast it arrives and how returns work matter as much as the price.

This business suits you if…

  1. You love fashion and enjoy explaining why a piece is worth it.
  2. You can spend 1–2 hours a day on content and customer messages.
  3. You're comfortable with fewer, bigger sales.
  4. You'll answer customers fast, in their language, even on weekends in November.

It doesn't suit you if you want to set it up and forget it, or if you plan to compete only on being the cheapest. Someone will always undercut you.

What you need before you sell

  • A store. Shopify is the simplest start.
  • An authentic supplier with real-time stock, so you don't sell what's gone. Luxury Distribution ships authentic designer fashion from Italy with DHL Express. The live catalogue holds 18,000+ in-stock pieces from 700+ brands, with no minimum order.
  • Clear policies: shipping times, duties and returns, written before your first order, not after it.
  • A small marketing budget, even $0 to start. Lesson 7 shows you how.
